Why Your Attic Ventilation Matters More Than You Think in an Oklahoma Summer
Every summer, we get a handful of calls that start the same way: "My AC runs all day and the upstairs is still 80 degrees. Is it time for a new roof?"
Sometimes yes, but more often the real problem is sitting right above the ceiling. Your attic.
In July and August, a poorly ventilated Oklahoma attic can hit 150°F. That heat radiates down through your ceiling, cooks your insulation's effectiveness, and puts your AC in a losing battle. It also bakes your shingles from the underside, shortening your roof's life by years.
Let's talk about what attic ventilation actually is, why most homes in Jenks don't have enough of it, and what to do about it.
How attic ventilation is supposed to work
The concept is simple: cool air enters low, hot air exits high, creating continuous airflow that keeps the attic close to outdoor temperature.
Intake happens at the soffits — the underside of your roof overhang. Soffit vents let cool air in from below.
Exhaust happens at the ridge — the top of the roof. As hot air rises, it escapes through ridge vents (or sometimes box vents / turbines).
Done right, your attic breathes on its own all day. No fans required. No electricity required. Just physics.
Why most Oklahoma attics fail at this
The Oklahoma building code requires "1 sq ft of net free ventilation area per 300 sq ft of attic space" (or 1:150 in some cases), roughly split 50/50 between intake and exhaust.
Translation: a 1,500 sq ft attic needs about 5 sq ft of total ventilation.
In the field? We inspect Jenks attics with maybe 1-2 sq ft of effective ventilation, sometimes less. Common culprits:
Blocked soffit vents — either painted over, clogged with dirt, or blocked by insulation that's been blown up against them.
Too few exhaust vents — a handful of box vents when a full ridge vent is called for.
Mixing exhaust types — installing both ridge vents and powered attic fans, which can short-circuit the airflow and actually pull conditioned air up from the house.
Bathroom exhaust fans venting into the attic — yes, this is shockingly common in older homes. It dumps hot moist air right where you don't want it.
How to tell if your ventilation is bad
You don't need special equipment. Check these signs:
1. Your upstairs is always hotter than your downstairs in summer — by more than 4-5 degrees.
2. Your shingles are curling, cracking, or bald in the middle of their life. Premature shingle failure is often a ventilation problem, not a shingle problem.
3. Ice dams form on your roof in winter. Yes, even in Oklahoma, we see ice dams — and they're a ventilation symptom.
4. You have moisture or mold in the attic. Warm moist air meeting cold roof deck creates condensation.
5. You can feel heat radiating from the ceiling. Place your hand on an upstairs ceiling on a hot afternoon. If it's hot to the touch, your attic is roasting.
Fixing ventilation
Best done during a reroof. The most effective time to fix ventilation is when you're replacing the roof anyway. Adding a continuous ridge vent, clearing and screening soffit vents, and ensuring proper soffit-to-ridge airflow during a reroof adds modest cost but massive long-term benefit.
Retrofit options exist if you're not ready for a new roof. We can cut in additional box vents or install a static ridge vent without a full replacement. We can also blow in proper soffit vent baffles to keep insulation from blocking airflow.
What about attic fans? Powered attic fans are controversial among roofers. They can help, but only if they're drawing from adequate intake. If the intake is too small, the fan will pull conditioned air from your living space up through light fixtures and gaps, spiking your electric bill. We usually recommend passive ridge ventilation over powered fans for most homes.
What proper ventilation will do for you
Lower AC bills. A properly ventilated attic runs 20-40 degrees cooler on hot days. That means less heat transfer into your home and less time your AC has to run.
Longer roof life. Shingles heated from above by the sun and below by a hot attic fail faster. Ventilation cuts that temperature.
No moisture problems. Adequate airflow keeps condensation from building up and growing mold.
Better indoor comfort. Upstairs bedrooms that actually match the thermostat setting. Revolutionary, we know.
A quick self-check this weekend
Stand outside and look at your soffits (the underside of your roof overhang). Do you see vents? Are they clear, or clogged with paint and debris?
Then look at the peak of your roof. Do you see a continuous vent running along the ridge? Box vents sticking up? Turbines? If you don't see exhaust venting of some kind, you almost certainly have a ventilation problem.
Finally, pop the attic hatch on a hot afternoon. If it feels like an oven up there, you've confirmed it.
